About Valeria Told
I see what no one looks at.
Twelve years running an opera house, today a medium. Both demand the same thing: looking where no one looks — and building something from it others can walk into.
In brief
Valeria Told, born in 1980 in Merano, was General Director of the Haydn Foundation of Bolzano and Trento from 2010 to 2021 — the youngest opera and orchestra director in Italy. In 2023 and 2024 she led the Fondazione INDA in Syracuse as Sovrintendente, Italy’s most important ancient theatre festival. Since 2022 she has been founder and CEO of Fortissimo Education, a European consortium of 23 institutions from 14 countries that secured 2.8 million euros from Creative Europe/InnovLab. Since 2026 she has worked as a medium and author: her book „Mehr als diese Welt” reached No. 1 on the Amazon bestseller list for ESP in April 2026, and under the Devinaya brand she trains people in mediumistic perception.
My path
Two careers, one movement
The first call
At twelve I learned for the first time what it means to be called. It was Joseph Haydn’s „The Creation” — the passage where sound becomes light. Goosebumps, every cell in motion, and the certainty that there is another dimension of world. That is where I wanted to go.
The call carried me through my studies — flute and dance on one side, economics and comparative literature on the other. I did not understand then why I needed both. Today I do.
Success on the outside
At thirty I became artistic and managing director. For twelve years I led the Haydn Foundation of Bolzano and Trento: more than 200 opera, symphonic and dance performances a year, over 80,000 visitors, 65 permanent staff and more than 850 fixed-term contracts annually, a budget of 7.5 million. In those years we doubled productivity, doubled the budget, built a new concert hall and created a transnational orchestra. In 2014 I carried through the merger of the region’s orchestra, opera and dance companies — until then considered politically impossible.
Then the Fondazione INDA in Syracuse: 45 performances in the ancient Greek theatre, more than 170,000 spectators a year, responsibility for 450 people.
In those years I learned what carries an organisation and what breaks it. How to bring along people who do not want to move. How to hold the conflicts that belong to every change. And how to strengthen yourself when your own confidence is shaken.
Everything outside, emptiness inside
The second call came on a Saturday afternoon. I was sitting in a beautiful flat, I had an afternoon free, and everything had been achieved: the work, the relationship, the home. And inside me was an emptiness for which there was no reason.
That was where the second journey began. It went inward: letting go of what I had learned as a child in order to be safe — wanting to please, achieving in order to be loved. That took strength, and it came through meditation, through healing sound, through ceremony. I became a sound therapist and gong master, not as a profession, but because I wanted to understand how it works.
The insight that shifted everything: happiness is not a state someone produces on the outside. It is a frequency inside me — and exactly one person gets to make sure I live it.
The journey into the unknown
A shamanic ceremony opened the way into the other dimension: contact with those who have died, journeys into former lives, levels our logic has no language for. Long before any of this became visible to others, this knowledge was my quiet companion — the most reliable compass I had.
The name came years later, during a meditation retreat: Devinaya. The path of the goddess. The way of divine information.
What connects both paths
I do the same thing today that I did then — only on another level. I recognise a structure where others see only feeling, and build something out of it that people can walk into. With Haydn that was music. In the directorships it was institutions, mergers, a concert hall. Today it is courses, a book, a retreat — and companies, where I make the invisible workable.
That is why mediumistic perception is a craft for me, not a gift. Whoever builds structures believes in what can be learned.
